Nuclear energy in Denmark?
On 10 February, the Benelux Business Club was invited to a very interesting network meeting together with the Danish-French Chamber of Commerce and the Danish-Italian Commercial Association.
The event took place at the domicile of COWI, one of the leading consulting engineering companies in Denmark
The topic was; ”Nuclear Energy”
Two speakers were invited, Claude Sainte-Catherine from the Nuclear Attaché at the French Embassy in Finland, and the grand old man on the topic in Denmark, Professor Povl L. Ølgaard.
Both speakers gave arguments for why we should implement a nuclear plant in Denmark and, furthermore, that the technology available today will prevent potential accidents.
Claude Sainte Cathrine gave examples from France where 19 nuclear reactors supply more than 80% of the country’s total energy consumption. Claude Sainte Catherine also presented a comparison of different energy sources.
The interesting presentation with facts and figures can be viewed here: presentation
Professor Poul L Ølgaard from Risø explained how Denmark today is importing a lot of nuclear power, but at the same time refuses to produce in Denmark. The main reason for this decision is a political conclusion from 1985, and none of today’s political parties are interested in touching on the topic again, which is a shame according to Poul L. Ølgaard .
After hearing the two speakers and an active debate among the participants, it was time for a light meal at Cowi and a possibility for networking among the participants.
All in all a great evening.
Thanks to the Danich-French Chamber for being host at this event.
